Linux kernel 5.811/12/2023 Thinking about uninstalling this whole 5.8 line up for now. Though I don't know why am I getting updates to different kernel line up, maybe 5.8 got pushed as a dependency of some other pkg, though it never happened before, plus I also installed my drivers through standard route i.e. Just got two kernel updates today 5.8.0-41 and 5.4.0-65, and booting through the former one, brings back the same issue, so I'll stick with the later one i.e. Initially I thought the mess is created due to me booting back to Linux from Windows 10 ("fast startup" option), as it happened before, when my network adapter went missing, but this time graphics and sound failure was a bit extra, so after shutting down Window 10 properly and disabling "fast startup" option when things remained the same, I choose to boot from version 5.4 and everthing came back to normal. My graphics driver stopped working properly, resolution got fixed to 1024x768, my network and sound adapters went missing too. I just went through the same experience few days back, I'm using Xubuntu 20.04 and recent kernel update from 5.4.0-64 to 5.8.0-40 ruined my system as well. Install missing packages for the latest installed kernel (in this case 5.8.0-36-generic): $ sudo apt install linux-headers-5.8.0-36-generic linux-hwe-5.8-headers-5.8.0-36 linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-36-genericĪnd you should be able to boot from the latest installed kernel without problems.List installed kernels: $ dpkg -l | grep linux-image. The easiest way should be (if your lsb release is focal): $ sudo apt install linux-generic-hwe-20.04Īlternatively, one can install missing packages manually:
